Sustainable Community Strategy - How we got there

Step 1 – July 2006

Decision taken to up-date the previous Community Strategy

In 2006, Somerset had the opportunity to be involved in the pilot a new national scheme – the Local Area Agreement (LAA).  The Local Area Agreement is an agreement between central government, local authorities and their partner organisations, such as health authorities and police, to improve the quality of life for local people.  It sets out the priorities for the county, what will be done about them and how achievements will be measured.

With the new focus on “local communities” brought about by the LAA, it was felt that the previous Community Strategy (developed in 2004) needed to be up dated and brought into line with the priorities set out in the LAA.

The Somerset Strategic Partnership (SSP) Forum which provides direction and accountability to the Somerset Strategic Partnership agreed that the existing Strategy needed to be refreshed and updated.  This would provide the opportunity to bring it into line with the new LAA and also to improve what the strategy says on important issues such as health and the concerns of vulnerable people.
