What were the key achievements in 2009/10?

  •  A West Somerset Strategic Partnership investment bid, supported by the SSP, included two aspects: The first was a Graduate Lift Off Programme; this is a programme that funds placements in small projects of a three to four month duration with the business providing match funding. It is expected that the programme will provide opportunities for new graduates who a finding it difficult to secure jobs. It will reduce those on benefits, increase the overall employment rate and prove inspirational to those considering a Level 4 qualification.  The Programme will also encourage employers to see the value of taking on graduates and hopefully eventually lead to a rise in average earnings. The second was a Starting Out Programme; this programme was formed with the old Youth Opportunity Scheme in mind and provides funding for placements of young people in businesses for a total of 12 months with the businesses again providing match funding.

  • There has been a national rise in those who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) as a result of rising youth unemployment due to economic conditions.  Performance for 2009/10 is showing an increase on the 2008/09 figure of 3.8% and although the target will not be achieved, figures within Somerset remain the lowest in the country at 4.4% (November 09 to January 10 average).

  • The Skills Somerset event in November 2009 attracted over 2,500 young people and their families, 50 companies and 26 educational establishments, promoted a wide range of learning and career opportunities within the County.

  • The West Somerset Employment and Skills Group has been working with the Economic Task Force and Business Forum as well as many other partners and has estimated a £700k programme of activity predominantly aimed at improving employment prospects, upskilling, establishing a mentoring scheme and stimulating young enterprise.

  • The Sedgemoor Employment and Skills Group has set up a local labour agreement with Morrison Utility Services that has been developed into an Employment and Skills Agreement.
