What the performance data means.

  • Serious crime has fallen from 8.67% to 7.02%.

  • Rate of hospital admissions per 100,000 for alcohol related harm has fallen from 1,443 to 1,286.

  • The number of drug users recorded as being in effective treatment increased from 1,142 to 1,198.

  • 79.3% of young offenders are engaged in education, employment or training an increase from 76.9%

  • Repeat incidences of domestic violence have fallen from 31% last year to 26% this year.

What were the key achievements in 2009/10?

  •  No serious case reviews of safeguarding practice had to be undertaken in 2009/10.

  • One of the major areas of work during 2009/10 was the Accident and Emergency Alcohol Liaison Project.  The Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) training programme has commenced for A&E Staff and a new post of Alcohol Liaison worker in Musgrove Park hospital has commenced to help reduce the rate of hospital admissions from alcohol related harm.

  • The Community Justice Panels (CJPs) are based on Restorative Justice principles in dealing with low level crime.  During 2009/10 a great deal of work has taken place to develop new CJPs across Somerset, and continue to establish existing CJPs. Of particular note, is that the South Somerset Community Justice Panel was one of 103 UK volunteering groups to win this year's The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups.

  • The two Community Safety Partnerships (formerly CDRPs) in Somerset have begun to investigate the possibility of merging, to become one partnership. This is currently on hold until a review has concluded it is evaluating existing community safety work across partner organisations, with a view to improving processes providing consistency, better run services and saving money.
