What the performance data means.

  • The under 18 conception rate has fallen from -7.80% last year to -14.00% this year.

  • Mortality rates from circulatory diseases at ages under 75 have fallen from 55.9 to 54.5.

  • The adult participation in sport has increased from 21% to 22.3%

  • The measurement of the effectiveness of child and adolescent mental health (CAMHS) services has shown an improvement from 14 to 15.

What were the key achievements in 2009/10?

  • Following the latest CAMHS mapping for 2009/10, performance is on track regarding the effectiveness of child and adolescent mental health services self assessment score of 16/16 to be achieved by the end of the LAA and we have now achieved the interim target of 15/16. We continue to monitor the integration of Learning Disabilities services within mainstream CAMHS and anticipate that this will be rated 4 out of 4 next year.

  • 92% of schools in Somerset achieved National Healthy Schools Status (March 2010), ahead of the March 2011 target of 85%.

  • 21 Somerset secondary schools either have an on site healthy clinic or are working towards one.

  • In an effort to reduce under 18 conception rates, Somerset continues to develop local initiatives with schools, colleges, the NHS and local communities to change behaviour by providing advice and information about Sexual Health risks, teenage pregnancies.  Although performance will not meet the targets set it has still improved since last year with a 7% reduction in rates.

  • Data from the 2009 National Child Measurement Programme suggest that the proportion of children in year 6 who are obese has increased slightly but this increase is not statistically significant and therefore could be due to national variation. It is hoped that a downward trend will be seen in the next year to reflect the success of the Healthy Schools Programme in Somerset.

  • Overall deaths from Cardiovascular disease in Somerset continue to decline, however, there remains some variation across the County.  Phase 2 of the NHS Health Checks pilot has been initiated in Bridgwater and will be used to test different call up mechanisms and different settings for the testing.

  • An external review has recently been undertaken of bone health services in Somerset.  The development of community based physical activity provision tailored for people at risk of falling was one of the two key recommendations from the review.
